Electrocardiogram (ECG) Overview
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a crucial test that helps diagnose various heart conditions by measuring the heart’s electrical activity.
During the test, small sticky dots (electrodes) and wire leads are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. These leads connect to an ECG machine, which records the heart’s electrical activity and displays it as a trace on a screen or paper.
Any irregularity in heart rhythm or rate, or damage to the heart muscle, can alter the heart’s electrical activity. A doctor examines the trace to identify specific features of different heart conditions.
Conditions Diagnosed by ECG
An ECG can help diagnose:
- Issues with the heart’s electrical system
- Heart attacks
- Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia) – rapid, slow, or irregular heartbeats
- Poor blood supply to the heart
- Heart inflammation (pericarditis or myocarditis)
- Cardiac arrest
Preparing for an ECG
An ECG is a simple test that usually requires no special preparation:
- You can eat and drink normally before the test unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
- Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking.
- If you have any allergies to adhesive tapes, let your doctor know as adhesives are needed to attach the electrodes.
- You will need to remove your upper clothing to allow the electrodes to be attached to your chest, arms, and legs. Wearing a separate top with trousers or a skirt makes it easier to access the chest. Underwire in a bra may interfere with the ECG reading, so you might be asked to remove it before the test.
- The ECG works best when the skin is clean, dry, and free of oils or lotions. Sometimes, the skin may need to be shaved to ensure proper electrode adhesion.
After the ECG
After the test, the electrodes will be removed, and you can resume normal activities immediately. A doctor will typically interpret your ECG results straight away, considering your medical history, symptoms, and clinical examination. The results will guide the determination of any necessary treatment.
